One of my most vivid experiences occurred on the Petersburg National Military Park in Virginia when I was 17 years old. It was a rainy day. I was walking up the path to Fort Friend, a preserved fortification from the Siege of Petersburg which took place in 1864 and 1865. Today the fort is composed of large earthen walls. The path I was on went over the wall directly into the fort. As I approached the fort, I heard men's voices coming from within. I thought nothing of it, simply assuming that there were other tourists in the fort. As I proceeded into the fort, the voices stopped. I immediately scanned the inside and the area beyond (where there was a clear field of view), but there was nobody there. I was not involved in ghost hunting and, although I enjoyed ghost stories, ghosts were the farthest thing from my mind on that day. I was there to appreciate the history. When I thought about the voices that I had heard immediately after I realized that no one was there, it dawned on me that I had been hearing many voices (not just one or two) as if a crowd of people were talking, but I could not, and admit at the time did not even think to try to make out any of the words that were being said.

More Stories
During an overnight seminar conducted by the Philadelphia Ghost Hunters Alliance at Fort Mifflin in Philadelphia, PA, one of my most vivid experiences occurred. During a break in conducting the seminar, I went into the restroom to change clothes. When I exited, I encountered Andy, who was giving a brief impromptu tour for an attendee who had arrived late for the seminar. We entered the casemates (dungeon-like area used as a prison during the Civil War) and began walking toward the back of the area. It was quite dark, and we did not have equipment along, as we were merely giving an informal tour. When one enters the casemates, there is a long hallway with casemate 1 on the left. The hallway then goes straight ahead and makes a 90 degree turn to the right. As we approached the turn, I heard voices, and the attendee asked, "Who is back here?" The voices continued, and immediately after making the turn, I heard someone laugh loudly in my ear. Sufficiently startled, I screamed rather loudly and was thoroughly convinced that this was Andy's idea of a practical joke. Someone turned on their flashlight to reveal that the only people in the casemates were Andy, the seminar attendee, and myself.....

A Ghostly Punch

Shortly after we moved into our Gettysburg home, I had a very strange experience that I cannot readily explain. We were sleeping on an air mattress, as we were in the process of buying a new bed. In the middle of the night, I was lying awake as Tonya had just gotten out of bed. I decided to roll over on my stomach and placed the pillow over my head. Shortly after I did this, I felt some one hit the pillow as with their fist. I was surprised and did not immediately react and only just began to consider what had just happened, when it happened again. I pulled the pillow off, expecting Tonya to be there, but she was not. This was the first indication that I had that there might be unusual things going on in our new home.
