Our Paranormal Experiences
A few years ago, the PGHA was investigating an area near Culp's Hill on the Gettysburg Battlefield. This area saw hard fighting on the morning of July 3rd, 1863, as Union troops assaulted the Confederates who had seized a portion of their breastworks the evening before. At approximately 9:45 P.M., we decided to call it quits for the evening to assure that we had time to pack our equipment in the car and leave the battlefield before it closed at 10:00 P.M. (this is a necessity for any investigation in Gettysburg, DO NOT stay on the battlefield after 10:00). We loaded the equipment and stopped for a minute to talk by the car before leaving. Sharon and I were standing side by side looking up the road towards a slight hill, Lew and Rachel were facing us. As we were talking, I noticed an individual walking from left to right approximately 100 ft. in front of me. I watched him for about 3 or 4 seconds before he seemed to disappear in a lightly wooded area off the side of the road. It took a moment for me to register what I had just seen. The individual I had watched was a solid gray color from the top of his head to his knees, including his hat, any clothing he wore and his skin. Although it was dark in the area I had witnessed him, I was able to see him clearly as if he was illuminated slightly. The movement of his arms indicated that he was in a hurry, but what was really fascinating was that he had no legs below the knees….there was simply nothing there. Just a second or two after he disappeared, a car came around a corner and over the hill and its lights shined brightly into the woods, fully illuminating them. It was clear to me that there was no one there. I know that I audibly gasped and may have even said "Oh My God!" I remember Sharon saying "Did you see that?" We quickly shared information and realized that we had both seen the same thing down to the last detail. Rachel and Lew saw nothing as their backs were turned and the event was too short in duration to draw their attention to it. The event, for me, was absolutely unforgettable. Seeing what may have been the apparition of a soldier who fought at Gettysburg was quite an emotional experience for someone who has studied the Civil War almost his entire life. Sadly, all of our equipment was packed when the event occurred, so no hard data was collected.
